Just about anyone can benefit from a meditation practice regardless of age, spiritual tradition, or any limiting mobility issues. When you read this, you may say to yourself, “Really? I’m not so sure!” You may be thinking...
“I’m not the kind of person who can just sit and relax.
“Quiet my mind! I think more thoughts when I try to meditate.”
“It is so uncomfortable sitting cross-legged that I end up in pain and feeling frustrated.”
“I wasn’t one of those people born with a calm, easy-going nature.”
“I was born a doer. Meditating is not in my DNA.”
I often hear variations of this from people considering taking a meditation class, and if experiences or thoughts such as these have stopped you from meditating, I encourage you to try again. I, too, had to stop and restart my relationship with meditation, and you can click here to read about my ‘road to meditation’ story. It may resonate with you.
Today, I am incredibly grateful for my daily Mindfulness Meditation practice. It continues to make subtle but profound differences in how I navigate my life. Indeed, life continues to show up in all its glory and messiness, full of joys and sorrows. Meditation won’t change that. However, it has helped me (and so many other people from all walks of life) gently open and relax more into whatever arises. I now better appreciate that each moment gives me a new moment to start again. Pausing, breathing, becoming aware of what is happening within me, and then bringing an attitude of kindness, compassion, curiosity, and non-judgment to whatever I am experiencing and observing has made all the difference in how I relate to life.
There is no right or wrong way to meditate! Anyone can do it, and everyone deserves a little more calm, balance, and clarity in their lives!
